Parquet in the bathroom: Design Parquet Navylam – which wood to choose and how to lay it
A wooden floor in a bathroom is possible if you use a system designed for it. The French manufacturer Design Parquet makes ship-deck style parquet for bathrooms, Navylam and Navylam+, in teak, acacia, doussie, iroko and wenge. You will find them in Openini's range.
Which wood is used
- Teak – according to the manufacturer, naturally rot-resistant and very durable thanks to its high density, so it suits bathrooms.
- Acacia – extremely hard, naturally rot-resistant, with a light golden colour.
- Doussie – a dense African wood, orange-red, its colour deepens with light.
- Iroko – an African wood with a warm natural colour.
- Wenge – very hard, deep brown, almost black.
All these species may show subtle white streaks – this is natural. The manufacturer also offers a beech version, but it is not covered by the warranty in bathrooms.
Navylam+ – no sanding and no poured joint
Navylam+ is a patented Design Parquet system. The boards come factory pre-oiled with a double integrated black joint, so there is no sanding and no rubber joint to pour: you put glue in the groove provided and join the boards. The floor is finished and watertight straight away. The manufacturer gives a 10-year warranty, valid only in bathrooms, excluding shower trays.
Classic Navylam is unfinished solid teak (10×90 and 14×90 mm) in a ship-deck pattern. The joints are filled with black Navyjoint compound and the floor is finished after installation.

Installation – as required by the manufacturer
- Navylam and Navylam+ must be glued. The manufacturer requires its own accessories, tested by its fitters: PS Navycol adhesive (about 1.2 kg/m²), Navycol+ for sealing the joints (1 tube per 5 m²) and, for classic Navylam, black Navyjoint joint compound (2 tubes per m²).
- After installation the floor must be treated with N+ oil (1 L covers about 35 m²).
- On underfloor heating the floor is glued with PS adhesive for good thermal conductivity.
- The warranty does not cover shower trays – tiles or a separate tray are a better choice there.
A cheaper alternative
On a tighter budget, vinyl flooring also suits bathrooms – it is waterproof and comes in many designs. But it does not replace the warmth and look of real wood.
