Oil or lacquer for wood flooring: which is better?
To choose engineered wood flooring and be happy with it for years, the surface finish matters as much as the wood itself. It defines how the floor performs, how it is maintained, how long it lasts and how resistant it is to wear. Wooden floors are either lacquered or finished with oil (sometimes wax).
Lacquer
At the factory, boards are lacquered in 6–7 layers with UV curing in between. Lacquer forms a protective film on the surface, creating an even and very durable finish. It protects the floor from wear, scratches, spills and dirt, and daily care is simple – vacuuming and a damp cloth. Renewal is needed only about once every 5–7 years. The downside: there is no direct contact with natural wood, and local damage usually means sanding and re-lacquering the whole floor.
Oil and wax
Oil and wax penetrate deep into the pores of the wood, strengthening it from within without forming a film. The result is a natural look and the warmth of real wood underfoot, and damage can be repaired locally – board by board. In return, oiled floors need more regular care with dedicated products and more frequent renewal, roughly every six months to a year.
