Forbo carpet flooring — Tessera, Flotex and Showtime

Forbo is a Dutch group that has been making commercial flooring since 1928. In carpet it offers three distinct technologies, and each solves a different problem.

Tessera — carpet tiles

Modular 50 × 50 cm tiles. Laid loose or on a tackifier, which means a damaged tile is replaced on its own — no need to lift the whole floor. That is the decisive argument in offices, where chair castors and coffee spills are a matter of when, not if.

Flotex — flocked flooring

Flotex is neither carpet nor vinyl. It is a floor of vertically implanted nylon fibres on a waterproof backing — around 70 million fibres per square metre.

The practical consequence is that the floor can be washed with water, including with a scrubber drier, and comes back looking new once dry. This is why Flotex is specified where ordinary carpet is not an option: healthcare, schools, hotel corridors. It carries allergy-association certification, because the fibres trap dust and washing removes it.

Needlefelt — Showtime, Forte, Markant, Akzent

Needlefelt carpet is supplied in rolls. Of the three technologies it is the densest and the most resistant to mechanical abuse, which is why it is used for exhibitions, conference halls, temporary stands and high-traffic zones.

How to choose

Open-plan office — Tessera tiles: replaceable spot by spot, and office wear is exactly that, local.
Healthcare, schools, hotel corridors — Flotex: washable and does not accumulate allergens.
Exhibitions, halls, temporary areas — needlefelt: the lowest cost per square metre and the highest tolerance for traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Can Flotex really be washed with water?

Yes, and that is its defining difference from carpet. The backing is impervious, so the floor can be cleaned with a scrubber drier and the fibres recover once dry.

Can a single carpet tile be replaced?

Yes, provided it was laid on a tackifier rather than fully bonded. It is worth keeping 2–3 % of the area in reserve — after a few years the same decor may no longer be in production.

Which carpet suits office chairs with castors?

Tessera tiles meet EN 985 for castor use. Needlefelt is not suitable — the fibre wears through locally and quickly.
