BOEN Plank 138 — single-strip engineered oak flooring

Plank 138 is BOEN's most versatile format: 14 × 138 × 2200 mm. Narrow enough for a standard apartment, long enough that the floor reads as calm rather than busy with cross joints.

Three-layer construction with a 3,5 mm oak wear layer, a cross-bonded core and a stabilising backing. That thickness allows the floor to be sanded and refinished at least twice — in practice a 40–50 year service life instead of the usual 15–20.

Finishes: Live Natural oil brings out the grain and can be refreshed in place, without sanding the whole floor; Live Pure lacquer is more resistant to daily wear and needs no periodic oiling. Gradings run from the quiet Andante to the lively Espressivo with knots and pronounced figure.

Every board uses the 5G Click locking system: install floating without adhesive, or glue down to the subfloor. Suitable for underfloor heating, both water-based and electric.

Construction and technical data

Format 14 × 138 × 2200 mm. Three-layer construction: a 3,5 mm oak wear layer, a cross-bonded core and a stabilising backing. The cross-bonded core stops the board from moving as humidity changes — which is why a wide engineered board stays stable where solid timber no longer works.

A 3,5 mm wear layer allows the floor to be sanded and refinished at least twice. In practice that means a 40–50 year service life instead of the usual 15–20.

2V bevel — chamfered on the two long edges. Each board stays readable as a separate element, but there are no visible cross joints, so the floor reads calmer than it would with a 4V bevel.

Gradings

One format, entirely different looks — the variable is the grading, meaning how the timber is selected:

Andante — calm figure, small knots, even colour. For restrained interiors where the floor should stay in the background.
Animoso — moderately lively, with visible knots and colour variation.
Vivo and Espressivo — pronounced rustic character with large knots and heartwood. The floor becomes a feature in its own right.

A separate group is the white and Creation ranges, where pigment worked into the surface shifts the tone without masking the grain.

Finishes

Live Natural oil penetrates the timber, brings out the grain and can be refreshed in place — a damaged area is repaired without sanding the whole floor.

Live Pure lacquer leaves the natural tone of the oak unchanged and adds no sheen, but resists daily wear better and needs no periodic oiling.

Live Matt — matt lacquer, the most practical option for homes with pets and for rental property.

Installation and underfloor heating

Every board uses the 5G Click locking system. Both methods work: floating without adhesive, or glued down to the subfloor. A glued floor is quieter underfoot, because no air gap is left between board and substrate.

Suitable for underfloor heating, water-based and electric. Conditions: subfloor temperature no higher than 29 °C, room temperature 18–21 °C, relative humidity 30–65 %.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can a Plank 138 floor be sanded?

At least twice. The oak wear layer is 3,5 mm and one sanding removes roughly 0,5–1 mm. Realistic service life is 40–50 years.

What is the difference between Live Natural and Live Pure?

Live Natural is an oil: it penetrates the timber and can be refreshed in place, but needs periodic maintenance. Live Pure is a lacquer: it forms a film, resists stains and wear better and needs no upkeep, but spot repair is not possible — only recoating the whole floor.

Does a 138 mm width suit a small flat?

Yes. At 138 mm this is the narrowest of the wide BOEN formats and it does not overwhelm a small room. For a very small space consider Prestige at 70 mm.

Can it be installed without adhesive?

Yes. The 5G Click system allows floating installation over underlay. Glueing makes the floor quieter and more stable, so for larger areas we recommend a glue-down installation.

How does Plank 138 differ from Plank 181 and Castle?

Width and thickness. Plank 181 is 181 mm wide and 13,2 mm thick, cheaper because of a thinner core. Castle is 209 mm wide at the same 14 mm thickness. The wear layer is 3,5 mm in all three.
