BOEN Plank 181 — engineered oak flooring, 181 mm

Plank 181 is a 181 mm wide oak board, 13,2 mm thick — the intermediate format between Plank 138 and Plank Castle. Wide enough to read as a continuous surface, without the price of a wide board.

Although the overall thickness is lower, the oak wear layer stays at 3,5 mm — renewal potential is identical to the 14 mm boards. The saving comes out of the core, not out of the surface you walk on.

The reduced thickness also brings a technical advantage: 13,2 mm conducts heat better, which makes this format the rational choice over underfloor heating. It also raises the floor level less — which matters in a renovation where door frames are already in place.

Finishes are Live Natural oil and Live Pure lacquer, gradings from Andante to Espressivo. 5G Click locking.

Construction and technical data

Format 13,2 × 181 × 2200 mm. Three-layer build with a 3,5 mm oak wear layer, identical to the 14 mm boards. The saving comes out of the core, not the surface you walk on: the core is 0,8 mm thinner.

The practical conclusion is simple: refinishing potential is the same as Plank 138 or Castle — at least two sandings, the same 40–50 year service life. What differs is the price and the finished floor height.

Why 13,2 mm is sometimes better than 14 mm

Underfloor heating. A thinner board restricts heat transfer less, so the system runs at a lower flow temperature and uses less energy.

Renovation. At 13,2 mm the floor level rises less. Where door frames are already fitted and lifting the old covering leaves little headroom, 0,8 mm can decide whether the door closes.

Where 14 mm wins: very large areas, and subfloors that are not perfectly level — a thicker board is more forgiving of unevenness.

Finishes and gradings

Live Natural oil brings out the grain and can be refreshed in place. Live Matt and Live Matt Plus are matt lacquers: more resistant to daily wear, no maintenance required.

Gradings run from the calm Andante to the lively Vivo and Espressivo. Separately there are the white ranges, where pigment shifts the tone without masking the grain.

Installation

5G Click locking: floating over underlay, or glued down to the subfloor. For underfloor heating — subfloor up to 29 °C, room 18–21 °C, relative humidity 30–65 %.

Frequently asked questions

Will a thinner board last less time?

No. Service life is set by the wear layer, and that is unchanged at 3,5 mm. What is thinner is the core, which only holds the structure together and plays no part in wear.

How much cheaper is it than Plank 138?

Prices start at €58/m² against €54/m² for Plank 138. The gap depends on the decor: the same grading in the 181 mm format usually costs about the same or slightly less than the narrower 138 mm, because the extra width offsets the thinner build.

Is it suitable for a kitchen or bathroom?

A kitchen, without reservation. A bathroom is not a place for wood because of sustained humidity — use vinyl flooring or tiles there.

How does it differ from Longstrip?

Longstrip is a three-strip board: the top layer is assembled from narrow strips, giving a fine pattern. Plank 181 is single-strip — the whole board is one continuous piece of oak.

Can it be combined with another format in the same home?

Yes, provided the decor and finish match. A common solution is Plank 181 in the living areas and Herringbone Click in the same colour in a hallway or living room.
